WHAT’S HAPPENING
- Latinos are eager to blend into American society, but they also work hard to keep their cultural identity — a paradox that reflects the complex beliefs of the nation’s fastest-growing minority, according to a poll of Latino households conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago (AP 7.20.10).
- 53% of interviews were conducted in English and 47% were done in Spanish (NewsWest9.com 8.12.10).
- Just over half the respondents in the survey, 54%, say it’s important that they change to assimilate into U.S. society. Yet about two-thirds, 66%, say that Latinos should maintain their distinct culture.
- But those two views are not necessarily at odds, according to experts, since identity is multidimensional, and people can see themselves as both Latino and as American.
